Are you interested in how to build a website using WordPress looks like?
One great place to get help from time to time with some specific things is “Youtube”. There are an endless variety of instructional videos that can help you sooner or later.
This guide is useful for users of all ages and skill levels who are interested in creating a website with WordPress and its add-ons.
Here is an overview from start to finish of all the steps we will cover in this guide.
⦁ Website hosting and domain registration
⦁ How to install WordPress
⦁ Install a template to change the design of your site
⦁ Creating a website with WordPress and creating pages
⦁ Customize WordPress with plugins and extensions
We recommend WordPress as a platform for your website.
WordPress is the world’s most popular website management and construction platform. Nearly 30% of all websites on the Internet run on WordPress.
WordPress is freeware and comes with thousands of free themes and extensions. It is extremely flexible and works with almost all third-party tools and services available to website owners.
We have used WordPress to build all the websites and our own website is also built on the content management system WordPress.
In addition, “making a website with WordPress” doesn’t just mean creating simple-looking websites, as WordPress can create extremely complex and impressive web solutions:
⦁ E-Commerce stores
⦁ Websites for data flow
⦁ Review websites
⦁ Creating multilingual websites
⦁ Job vacancy websites
⦁ Websites for asking and answering questions
⦁ Wikipedia websites
What types of websites can you create with WordPress?
Now let’s move on…
1. Website Setup and Domain Registration.
One of the most common mistakes beginners make is choosing the wrong website platform.
For most, creating a website is the perfect solution for WordPress. It comes with thousands of themes and add-ons that allow you to create any website you could only dream of before.
WordPress is free to download for everyone and can be used to build websites without any restrictions.
What is a domain?
Your website domain is the address of your website on the Internet. This is what users need to type into their web browser (bing.com or google.com) to reach your site.
Next, you need website hosting. All websites available on the Internet need hosting. This is going to be your website home on the internet.
There are a number of well-known web hosting companies out there, but we’ll talk in more detail about one of the most popular companies like “GoDaddy.com”
Creating a website with WordPress step by step:
We’re moving on to buying a domain and hosting.
Go to www.godaddy.com.
Click on “Hosting” in the navigation menu and then on the link “Web Hosting – On Sale”.
This will take you to the GoDaddy web hosting page where you will need to choose a hosting plan.
Scroll down to see the available accommodation plans for GoDaddy.
We will make it easier for you to click on the “Add to Cart” button under the accommodation plan “the economy”.
Now we see that the accommodation plan has been added to the shopping cart and next we have to select (select term length) the length of the term. We are choosing 12 months for this demonstration.
Scrolling down a bit, we see that GoDaddy has just automatically added a Website Back Up and an automatic daily scan and regular tracking service to your shopping cart.
Let’s say it’s optional and we don’t need it at the moment, so we click “No Thanks” and it will be removed from your cart.
Scrolling further down, we’ll see some more product add-ons, such as “Add Essential Website Security” and “Add Standard SSL Certificate.”
Add Essential Website Security protects you from hackers and malware. Automatic daily scans detect malware on your site and guarantee its removal.
Add Standard SSL Certificate is useful for protecting credit card numbers, passwords, and other sensitive information.
If you do not yet have enough experience in this area, you may accidentally end up purchasing items that you do not really need. For this reason, we encourage you to refrain from clicking on these add-ons at this time, as you will be able to add them to your website later if needed.
Next, click the “Continue With These Options” button.
Next, we get a free domain with the accommodation plan we have chosen, for which we have chosen “the economy”.
You will now see a box where you can type the name of your preferred domain or website, which in my case is the name of the website I want to use, or “mgmagsinorealty.com”.
After that, click the “Search” button to see if it exists. Now we see that our website is loading and the domain name is available.
If the domain you want is in use or in use, it simply means that someone else is already using it. In this case, you can modify your domain a bit and make it more unique so that it becomes usable.
Okay, now that everything is fine and as it should be, we click on the “Select And Continue” button, which takes me to the “Checkout” page to review my order.
Before continuing with this order, we will now review the products we have previously added to the cart.
The first product we see is “the economy Linux hosting with cPanel”, which is the first of the previously added products.
It is now important to check that the term length is set to 12 months.
If you have something else for the automatically selected deadline, all you have to do is click on this drop-down menu to make sure 12 months is selected.
For example, if you choose 6 months, 3 months, or 1 month, your site’s domain will become chargeable.
In addition to the 12-month term, there is also the highest discount rate, which is currently 66%.
Next, we’ll see “Office 365 Starter Email,” but since we don’t need it right now, we’ll delete it from our cart.
We’ll then see the domain name we added earlier for free. Note that the drop-down menu should definitely have 1 year selected, as only then will you receive a “free” domain for the first year.
From time to time, GoDaddy automatically changes this term to 2 years, in which case you simply need to set it to 1 year. Scrolling down we can still see some extras, but we are not talking about them at the moment because they are not very important to us.
Let me emphasize again that all you need to set up and run your site are two things (the economy Linux hosting with cPanel in this case) a hosting plan and a domain to register.
Now we have reached the point where we can click on the “Create Account” button to create an account or “Sign In” to log in, where we can complete our purchases.
But now we’re starting to create a new account.
Before clicking the “Create Account” button to create a new account, we must enter our email address in the “Email” field of the “Create an Account” form. It is extremely important to use a valid email address, as all emails sent by GoDaddy to confirm and update data (passwords and usernames) will be sent to the email you provide.
At this time, we’ve entered the email address in the username field, which is completely correct, and that’s why we’re no longer touching it.
Next, we enter a password of at least nine digits of our choice in the “Password” field, and if we are also interested in information about the products and services offered by GoDaddy, then we will tick the small box. All you have to do is click on the “Create Account” button.
We’ll now take you back to the “Checkout” page, where we’ll add your billing information.
We fill out all the fields on the form before moving on to the next step.
Once we get to that point, we just click the “Save” button.
Next, we’ll enter your payment information in the fields provided, including your debit or credit card number, expiration date, and security code.
Please note that we can also pay via PayPal, so we use the most appropriate payment method for us.
When done, click the “Save” button and then the “Complete Purchase” button to save your payment information.
And that’s it! Now that we’ve successfully completed our purchase, we’ll click on the profile at the top right of our page.
Now we click on the “My Products” link and see that we need to verify our email address.
At this point, we need to confirm the email sent to us by GoDaddy, which has been sent to our email address.
Next, we’ll open a tab where we can access our inbox.
We have now reached the e-mail box where we see two e-mails. The first email has been successfully completed for your order, and the second email, titled “action required please verify your email address,” is for verifying your email address, which we’ll click next to open the email.
Next, we click “verify your email now”.
Next we see “Success! We verified your email address ”, which tells us that our email verification was successful.
Once your account is verified, GoDaddy will take care of everything else to make sure your account is active. Note that it may take 5 or even up to 10 minutes for GoDaddy to be set up correctly.
And now you are one of the new owners of the GoDaddy web hosting package and free domain.
In addition, you can set up “cPanel” for yourself to better manage your web hosting account.
By selecting “My products” from the profile and already in the “Web Hosting” area, you can set up a “cPanel” account by clicking on the “Set up” button on the right, which will take you to the “My Hosting” page to start the process.
Next, we come to a page where we have to select the correct domain from the “select a domain from your account” box to set up your “cPanel” account and just click the “Next” button to get to the next step.
You will now be directed to a page where you can select the data center that suits you. GoDaddy recommends that we opt for a data center located in the region closest to your target audience. If you’re having trouble choosing the location of the data center you’ve selected, just click the “Next” button below.
Next, you’ve come to a page where we can install WordPress to build your website, but for now, just click “Not now, thanks”, because in this case it’s cPanel.
Next, click the “Finish” button to start the cPanel installation process, which only takes a few minutes to complete.
So, let’s be on the same side with it!
Now that you have successfully set up your cPanel account, managing your web hosting account is extremely convenient and easy.
2. Installing WordPress
When you’re ready, let’s get started!
Log in to your GoDaddy account by entering your username and password, or if you are already logged in, click on your profile in the top right corner of the page to select “My Products”.
In the “Web Hosting” area, where we see something like “Economy Linux hosting with cPanel”, we need to click on the “Manage” button on the right, which will take you to your hosting account page.
Clicking the “cPanel Admin” button at the top right of the page will open a tab that will take you to your cPanel administration page.
When you reach the cPanel administration page, quickly type “wordpress” in the search box to find WordPress, and then click on the WordPress logo.
And we have reached the page where you have to click on the “Install this application” button.
Scrolling down in the settings area, we will see an automatically and default username, but of course we need to change it and come up with a new username for ourselves as an administrator.
We do exactly the same with our password.
Therefore, it is very important that you write down or remember your username and password, as we will use them to log in to your WordPress in the future and to manage your site.
These are the only settings we need at the moment, and we’re ready to install your WordPress.
Next, just click the “Install” button at the bottom of the page.
The installation process will now begin, which should only take a few seconds.
To access your WordPress site, you need to type in your domain name, a slash and then “wp-admin”.
Enter the username and password you previously used to install WordPress.
You will now be logged in to your WordPress site and welcome page, which will only appear for the first time after installing WordPress.
In this case, all you have to do is click the “No Thanks” button, because we want to manually configure our WordPress settings for complete control over our platform. A pop-up window will open and just click “OK” to continue.
And that’s it, welcome to WordPress!
3. Select and Install Your Template
The visual appearance of your WordPress site is controlled by the WordPress theme, which makes creating a website with WordPress extremely easy.
WordPress themes are professionally designed templates that you can install on your website to change its look.
By default, each WordPress site is assigned a specific key theme. When you visit your website, it looks something like this:
This is not very appealing for most users.
Don’t worry, there are thousands of free and paid WordPress themes on the Internet that you can install on your site.
You can change your own theme from the WordPress admin toolbar. Visit the “Appearance >> Theme” page, and click the “Add New” button.
Next, you can choose from thousands of free WordPress themes. You can filter them by popularity as well as many other data.
Need help choosing a topic? Check out some great WordPress enterprise themes from us.
In this case, we use the theme “Bento”. This is a popular multi-purpose WordPress theme that is flexible with its design choices for different websites.
If you are aware of the name of the topic you want, you can search for that topic by entering the name in the search field.
WordPress shows the searched topic in the search results. Next, you need to move the mouse cursor to the topic and click the “Install” button.
Now that you’ve reached one side of installing the theme, you can customize it by clicking the “Customize” link in the menu called “Appearance.”
This launches the theme customizer, where you can change your theme settings with a live preview of your website.
You certainly don’t need to set up your theme settings right away, because it’s much easier and more convenient for you to do this later with some added content.
Next, we’ll look at how to add content to your WordPress site.
4. Add Content to Your Site
WordPress has two default content types called posts and pages.
Posts are part of a blog and appear in chronological order (newer items appear first).
By default, WordPress displays your blog posts on the front page of your website, but WordPress allows you to use any WordPress page as your front page (we’ll talk about that a little later).
You can create a separate page for your blog and news. However, you can create a website without any blog or newsletter.
Now we move on to how to add content to your website.
We’ll start by adding a few pages to our WordPress site. Don’t worry if you don’t currently have enough material for the content of these pages, as you can constantly edit and update the pages on your site.
Move your mouse cursor to the “Pages” link in the WordPress administrator area, where the menu will open and you will have to click “Add New”. Then something like this should appear on your screen to change the page:
You should name your page first, in this case “Home”.
After that, you can add content in the text editor below. You can add text, links, images, videos, audio files, and more.
After adding the content, click the “Publish” button to publish the material on your page.
You can repeat the previous step by adding more pages for even more content. Such as the basic pages “About Us”, “Contact”, “Blog” that you see on various websites on a daily basis.
Next, we’ll add a couple of blog posts.
Now go to the “Posts” link in the admin area again and click on “Add New”.
Once again, you should see something on your screen like you used to add pages to make changes.
You can title your post here and add content to the post content editor below. There you may also notice some additional features, such as “post formats”, “categories” and “tags”.
In order for everything to be visible on your site, we need to click the “Save” button to save the post as a draft or “Publish” to publish.
For more detailed instructions on how to use all of these features, see “How to add new posts in WordPress.”
5. Website Customization
Now that you’ve created some content for your website, you can customize it to give your site a presentable look.
Let’s start by creating a static front page.
⦁ Setting up a static page
You need to go to the “Reading” page from the “Settings” menu. Under “Your homepage displays,” you need to select “A static page” and then select your home and a blog page that you have previously created.
Remember to click the “Save Changes” button at the bottom of the page to save your settings.
In this case, WordPress will use a page called “Home” previously created by us as the first page, and a page called “Blog” for blog posts.
⦁ Changing the Website Title
During installation, you can choose a title for your site. WordPress automatically tags the title of your site, saying, “Just another WordPress site.”
In fact, you can change your site title and tagline at any time by visiting the Settings >> General page.
Your “website title” will be the name of your website. A “tagline” is usually a box that describes your website. However, you can leave this box blank if you wish.
Don’t forget to click the “Save Changes” button again to save your settings.
⦁ Configure Comment Settings
WordPress offers a built-in commenting system that allows users to comment on their posts. It’s great for engaging users, but it’s also targeted by spammers.
To do this, you need to enable moderation of comments on your website.
Visit the “Setting >> Discussions” page and scroll down to see something like “Before a comment appears”. Check the box next to “Comment must be manually approved” to select the box next to it.
Don’t forget to click the “Save Changes” button again to save your settings.
⦁ Navigation Menu Creation
Navigation menus allow users to browse different pages or sections of your website. WordPress has a powerful navigation system menu, and your WordPress theme uses that system to display menus.
We will add a navigation menu to our website.
Initially, you need to go to the “Appearance >> Menus” page, enter a name for your navigation menu (Menu name) and then click the “Create Menu” button.
WordPress has now created a navigation menu for you, but as you can see, it is currently without any content.
Next, you need to select the pages you want to display in your menu, and then click the “Add to Menu” button.
You should now see how the navigation menu fills up with the pages you’ve added. In addition, we can change their order in the menu.
Next, you need to select the “display location” checkbox below the attached pages. Menu locations are usually already predefined by the WordPress theme, but generally the main navigation menu is still at the top of the theme.
Finally, click the “Save Menu” button to save and see your menu in the WordPress theme.
For more instructions, see “How do I add a navigation menu to your WordPress site?”.
6. Installing Plugins
WordPress plug-ins are nothing more than just applications for WordPress that allow you to add a variety of features to your site. Such as contact form, photo gallery and more.
